Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) recognizes the special trust patients place in your services. Standards for ACHC Sleep Accreditation require background checks on all direct care personnel.

Standard Requirements

Standard SLC4-2F: Written policies and procedures are established and implemented in regard to background checks being completed on personnel that have direct client/patient care and/or access to client/patient records. Background checks include: Office of Inspector General (OIG) exclusion list, criminal background record and national sex offender registry.

A criminal background check can be performed on a national level using a vast database of records. These records can be used to find out about the criminal histories of individuals.

Over 500,000 sex offenders in the U.S. are listed in the national sex offender registry. Healthcare providers can use the registry to identify individuals who have been charged with a sex crime or have been convicted of committing a sex crime.

Through a federal exclusion search, employers can also access a list of healthcare workers who are not allowed to receive federal funds. This allows them to identify individuals with criminal backgrounds and prevent them from participating in programs that are funded by the federal government, like Medicare and Medicaid.
